This morning on my way in to work, I found myself sitting behind this beautiful piece of government revenue collection technology. It has at least 7 cameras I can see: 4 on the back, 3 on the roof toward the front. Maybe more. Street parkers in Madison beware, the city is coming for you!

I knew they were parking Nazis, but that seems a bit overkill

Hard to tell from the picture but hey're angled away from the back of the car a little bit.

Parking enforcement around here has cameras, but they're much more discrete than that. It looks like they just cudgeled off the shelf security cameras all over that thing.

Seems like they're just driving around, recording EVERYTHING. Then they'll go through the footage later and send tickets through the mail to any offenders spotted.

I think here they actually want the cameras to be so noticeable, so when people see this monstrosity driving around it puts the fear of parking tickets in them.

I did a little research and it turns out they're a little trickier than that , actually.
There cameras are recording all the cars as the parking enforcement officer drives around. The cars are running a system called autoChalk .
"This innovative system includes rugged lasers, cameras, precision GPS locating devices and a Panasonic Toughbook computer. The autoChalk system alerts Parking Enforcement Officers (PEO) of a detected violation, which must then be verified by the PEO thru the data displayed. A citation is then issued."
Also apparently if you move your car just a little bit, they still might give you a ticket if your car is still on the same block.

That's stupid. I thought as long as the wheels make one complete revolution, it's been "moved."
Damn Meter-maids are getting ruthless.
